Find reliable Malawi airport transfer information for your arrival, including helpful travel tips and common scams to avoid.
We have not yet verified how travellers currently reach Malawi from the airport serving it, so we are not publishing routes, operators or fares we cannot stand behind. For what is running on the day you travel, the arrivals information published by your arrival airport is the reliable source, and your accommodation will usually know what works best for the hour you land.
Helpful Tips
Airtel Money or TNM Mpamba settle minibus fares instantly. No coins needed. Drivers prefer the apps. Tap, confirm, ride. Cashless keeps pockets light.
Intercape and AXA coaches leave City Centre bus depot in Blantyre for long-distance routes. Arrive thirty minutes early. Queue forms quickly. Tickets sell out.
Shared taxis from Lilongwe airport to Old Town cost roughly half the price of private taxis. Bargain politely. Meet fellow travelers. Save cash for dinner.
Book AXA coaches online in advance for weekend travel to avoid sold-out buses
Common Scams to Avoid
Unofficial porters at Chileka International Airport (Blantyre) insist on carrying bags a few metres and then demand inflated tips. Firmly decline any unsolicited help and keep luggage on your trolley until you reach official check-in.
Taxi touts inside the arrivals hall quote prices several times the metered rate for trips into Blantyre city centre. Walk past them to the official taxi rank outside or pre-book via the airport information desk.
Currency-exchange booths at the airport offer visibly poorer rates than banks in town and sometimes miscount notes. Change only what you need for the first day and use ATMs or city-centre banks for the rest.
